Short and sweet: if all you’re looking for is a super-easy, convenient way to order a new boiler and installation service – without having to find your own plumber – then I can honestly say – look no further. A service like BOXT can be a great solution.

Is BOXT Good Value (i.e. Cheaper Than Using a Local Plumber)?

Yes and no. But generally, yes.

As both a landlord (with multiple properties) and a homeowner, I’ve perused BOXT’s website – and similar services – several times when looking for boiler supply and installation deals. In my experience, whether they offer the best value can be hit or miss (always the way!).

Sometimes they work out considerably cheaper (especially when promotions are running – which they often are!); other times there isn’t a competitive deal in sight. However, even when they do cost more, the difference is often marginal and can be worth it purely for the convenience factor, but that’s for you to decide.

My recommendation is:

1. Visit BOXT and fill in their quote form to get a list of suitable boilers for your circumstances
2. Pick a boiler (or boilers) you like and note down the supply and installation price
3. Google the same models to see how much you can buy the boiler for from different suppliers, and get installation quotes from local plumbers
4. Compare prices with BOXT and similar services (more on those coming right up!)

That way, you’ll have a clear picture of what offers the best value.

There’s a simple answer to that: they all, literally, pretty much do the same thing!

If you’re looking for an online boiler supply and installation service, I personally don’t think you can go wrong with any of them (and if things do go balls-up, it’s likely a random stroke of bad luck). Some may offer different boiler options, and some may have better deals (although, that’s often offset by the price-match guarantee that most of them provide).

Warning: BOXT and Online Boiler Supply & Installation Services Aren’t for Everyone!

Let me outline some scenarios where I think BOXT and similar services might (or might not) be suitable for you.

To clarify once again: I’m not a boiler expert, I’m just an average consumer, so I’m sharing my thoughts from that perspective.

• Need one-to-one local support: If you want all the personal touches that a traditional local plumber provides, an online service like BOXT probably isn’t for you. Their process is fairly simple: you choose the boiler you want, and a local plumber is assigned to manage the installation – there isn’t much of anything in between.
• Complex scenarios: If your situation is complicated and requires careful planning or a home visit, skip an online ordering service and go with a local expert.
• Struggle to answer the quote questions: To get an accurate supply and installation quote, you’ll need to answer a series of questions about your current setup. While BOXT does a good job of explaining what’s needed with clear visuals, some details, like where your flue exits, the distance of your boiler from an outside wall, or the flue’s shape, can be tricky for some people. Incorrect answers can affect both the accuracy of your quote and the boilers you’re offered.
• Boiler idiot: Once you enter your details, you may be presented with multiple boiler options, sometimes dozens. If you don’t know much about boilers, or if you don’t want to do your own research to draw your own conclusions – choosing the right one can be overwhelming. So you might be better off using a local expert that can guide you through their recommendations based on your circumstances.

So there are definitely practical considerations to make before pulling the trigger. That said, BOXT has over 50,000 reviews on TrustPilot with a 4.8/5 rating, and other similar services are hitting comparable numbers. I imagine, most customers aren’t boiler experts, so a little boiler ignorance doesn’t have to be a dealbreaker. Make of that what you will.
