Start Your Own Property Blog
This article was written on 18 Sep 2008

I’ve been blogging for nearly 2 years now and uptil now I haven’t actually covered the topic of blogging. Hmm..odd. I wonder what held me back? And the only reason I’m covering the issue now is because I’ve recently been receiving a lot of emails from people asking me how they can set up their own blog, similar to this one.
Blogging has been an online phenomenon for some time now, and despite popular belief, it really isn’t that difficult to set one up. Blogging is great on so many levels, but primarily, because it’s a powerful tool to potentially reach out to millions of people and talk utter nonsense. It’s great.
How to start your own blog
Just to clarify, i’m briefly going to go over the steps of how to startup your own blog; i’m not going to provide elaborate documentation on how to complete each task, because there are already great resources out there. If you get stuck on a step, I recommend using Google to obtain further advice.
- Get yourself a domain (www.example.com) and hosting space. Hosting space is the space in which the files for your blog will be saved. There are loads of great domain/hosting companies out there. I use 34sp. They’re cheap, and their customer service is pretty reliable from what I’ve experienced.
- Download blogging software. I use Wordpress. Wordpress is easy to use, and they have intensive documentation, so anyone can learn how to set one up.
- Once you’ve downloaded Wordpress, you’ll need to upload the files onto your hosting server. I use software called FileZilla (it’s free), but your hosting provider should also provide you with a web-based control panel which will allow you to do the same.
- Look into your Wordpress admin section and pick an appropriate theme (look) for your blog.
I’m going to elaborate on the last point, to choose an appropriate Wordpress theme. A theme is basically a “skin” for your blog. There are thousands of free and premium themes available to download. The best resource for free themes is over at Wordpress Themes.
I’ve just created my own free Property related theme for anyone who wants to use it. Once installed, it will look a little something like this:

You can download that here
Anyways, that’s my brief little guide on how to start your own property blog.
The world of “property blogging” world is extremely small, dry and bland. It’s always been that way; not entirely sure why. Even little John’s Bakers is blogging about his latest receipes.
It’s an extremely small property community at the moment, kind of like a small Village up in the corner of Scotland somewhere. I think I’ve come across most of the active property blogs that are online today. That’s how SMALL the sector is.
I’d love for more estate agents and letting agents to start writing their own blogs. I personally wouldn’t want them to write general industry crap because we have Rightmove and the BCC for that. But I would like to read about personal experiences- the ups,the downs and the crafty nature of the industry. I think that’s a niche area of blogging and a potential money spinner (I’ve got you interested now, right?). Yeah, it’s no secret, successful blogs pull in cash! Lots of cash. And let’s face it, Estate agents have more than enough time on their hands right now, and very little money. It’s a win-win situation.
I know I’d be interesting in reading about the daily life of a dodgy estate agent…wouldn’t you?
