UK Interest Rate Trends

Category: Life Is A Rant

Apparently people like statistics, and lots of them. Moreover, apparently people don’t like random data thrown into a table, they actually like the data displayed nicely in graphs so the data becomes information that is easy to digest. I learnt that from a guy named Lee who left a comment in my previous blog entry (UK national House Price Statistics). He didn’t like the fact that I didn’t display my stats for the ‘UK national house prices’ in graphs, consequently hurt my
fragile heart
hurt my fragile heart with this harsh comment:

“Pretty graphs work for me - ones that actually show the trend over time… this doesn’t. Sorry”

What I did was kind of like tell a story without drawing pretty pictures, like a comic book- HEAVEN FORBID!! But hey, at least he said “sorry”, even though my spider senses detect a major hint of sarcasm. But i’d just like to add, I only started gathering data 2 days ago for that particular area, so plotting a graph would have been pointless. DAMN YOU, Lee,
for getting
me into a
hissy fit.
DAMN YOU, Lee, for getting me into a hissy fit.

Anyways, putting that aside, we all know I like to give the people what they want, aye? Right, so, I’ve been rather geeky over the past few hours; i’ve gathered some stats that run over the period of 10years and put together a graph showing the change in the UK base rate. The graph will automatically update as interest rates change in the future.

You can see the fruits of my labour by following the link, UK Interest Rate Trends.

I hope that tickles your taste buds a little more than my previous attempts, Lee!

The results are quite interesting. I wasn’t actually sure what the trend would look like. What’s funny is that people are complaining about interest rates now, but if you look at the graph, you can see that interest rates are a hell of a lot better than they were in 1997, with a peak of 7.5%. The summer of 2003 was the golden era though, with an awesome rate of 3.5%.
